“I'm hypersensitive, a wallflower,” Evan Spade sings on “Joyride”, the second track on his eponymous first album. Unfortunately, while being a wallflower is about the hip-est thing to be these days, Spade should have just stayed in the background.
It's not that Spade's album is horrible, but it's less than remarkable. It sounds a little like The Script, but Spade has a vocal style more like the lead singer of Creed.
Better vocals probably wouldn't save the lyrics, however. With very little pitch and basically a tone-deaf moaning, Spade wades around in shallow waters. “It's been two years, six days, and eighteen hours since I saw you” he sings on “Human Cannonball”, followed by a longer list of more times and days, all of which has no musical tone to it.
The music of Evan Spade is probably the best part, but it's still nothing great. It's upbeat pop-rock, similar to Train or Three Doors Down. If the music was a little cheesier, it would probably be perfect for radio play, and if it was a little better, it would be perfect for college radio play. But it's not pop-py enough for the mainstream or ironic enough for the indie crowd, so it just kind of floats in the middle.
You won't hate Evan Spade, but you won't be impressed, either.
