For three twenty one year olds living in Essex and going through with writing, arranging, and mostly producing their own music, Blisted Pearl conceived and released their first EP earlier this year. Over Easter the band recorded their first 4 track EP at Stagg Studios in Whitam, Essex. Within three days, the band recorded all the instrumental elements and vocals with another day spent purely on mixing and mastering the self titled EP.
Referencing the likes of the Foo Fighters, Biffy Clyro, and The Replacements as primary influences in their music, the first track of their self titled EP, “Saw You” alludes to a deep admiration to the efforts put forth by Dave Grohl and company. The track features the churn of repeating guitar riffs that rely on the heavy drum influences as the song’s backbone. To their credit, the trio has an adept handle on writing lyrics and melody structure.
Elsewhere, “What We’ve Got Left” is somewhat typical garage band fodder that offers a taste of relationship pain in a personal and heartfelt manner but also highlights the variance in the quality of both the recordings and arrangements on the EP.
The stand out track on the EP is definitely, “Bring Them Home” a track about soldiers at war, with all profits from the track going to the Help for Heroes organization. The song begins with a military sergeant yelling “Left, Right, Left” and follows onto a track where everything comes together. The lead singer’s vocals are honest and sincere in his delivery as are the lyrics, which are tied into a well crafted melody.
Overall, Blisted Pearl’s EP is a good base for future growth; however the young band is obviously aware of the effort and mastery needed to proceed in the indie scene, which is teeming with small rock outfits like theirs. The EP is a strong and mature album, and is an indication of good things to come from this young band.
