Confidence exudes from Gloria Miller’s latest album, Let Go. An experienced artist in both life and music, she puts several layers of genres to work on the record with interesting results. Citing inspirations such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Holliday, Sarah Vaughn, and Natalie Cole, the singer describes the album as “a musical journey through love, loss and recovery.”
Entirely recorded in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Gloria Miller set to work traversing the annals of love and loss resulting in a smooth and thoughtful album. A key track on Let Go is “Let Go & Let God,” which was written about a painful breakup and the ensuing grieving process she went through. With its rich instrumental cursors that marry with Miller’s light and poignant vocals, produce an endearing addition to the album. Interestingly enough, the breakup resulted in a surprise proposal and marriage for the singer earlier this year.
Elsewhere tracks like the R&B influenced "So Much More" and "Time To Say Goodbye" are solid additions which have the distinctive 80’s sound to them. Not surprisingly, both tracks were written and recorded over 10 years ago. “He’s The One” is a track that lands at the crossroads between a Broadway show tune and a smooth Jazz ditty. “Shine” flows in the same vein but features a more sultry sound that Miller finds hard in melding her bright vocals to.
Let Go is a solid piece that features several different influences and this is both its best and worst feature. Miller plays with several different sounds, however some sounds alienate her bright and genuine voice. The chanteuse shines on softer tracks that don’t overpower her vocals like “Time to Say Goodbye.” As she progresses, let’s hope Miller sticks to the grooves that suit her the most and continues to soar.
