Dirty Dancing is an iconic movie that never ages. The songs embrace the memories of days gone by and bring to life feelings of youth and vitality. I can still remember dancing to this movie as a teenager, madly in love with the imagery it represented. I tapped my feet and spun around to the impassioned songs, dreaming of dancing with Patrick Swayze and hearing my mother yell at me to get off the couch arms. I had a thing about jumping off the couch during that epic scene at the end where Baby leaps off the stage into the waiting arms of Patrick Swayze. Insert girly sigh.
“You Don’t Own Me” is a 2003 remastered song performed by The Blow Monkeys. It has the same impassioned grit that the original had, but the colors invoked by the sax, multi-instrumentals and the edgy vocals burn brighter today than they ever did with the original recording. Swing your hips and swagger to the attitude. Slip on some heels and let the raw power of being yourself shine through with every emboldened scream and sax interlude. Remember the passion from the movie and how it made you feel those many years ago and let your imagination take flight.
“Hungry Eyes” is a song that has always captured my heart. Stand up. Backward swing with your left foot and rotate your hips. Snap it back as you seduce your partner with your body. Feel them in front of you. Every note of music takes you back to the scenes in the movie and the chemistry between the two characters. Even if you are just listening to it in your bedroom, get up and move. Roll your shoulders, dip backwards against a doorway. Explore the sensual side of yourself as the erotic lure of this song takes flight in your heart. Eric Carmen’s classic, remastered in 2003 is every bit as powerful today as it was when the original 1987 movie came out. The percussion, keyboards and multi-instrumentation marry well with his vocals to feel the bleed. The hunger to connect is palpable. Let it rule you and surrender to the magic of the moment.
“(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” is another memory brought to life. I can still remember standing in front of the TV, working my hips and trying to move my feet like the dancers. Insert jumping off the couch and my mother yelling. Ahh, such fond memories. The passion realized on the screen is brought to life by the amazing voices of Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes. If any song could encapsulate Dirty Dancing it would be this. The victory of love over the impossible and the sheer bliss of watching the movement of the dancers swaying to the percussion and barrage of instruments that creates a beat you can’t help but move to.
Dirty Dancing The Deluxe Anniversary Edition was very much fan driven. Votes were taken for the cover and it was determined that “The Lift” picture was the winner. The special edition book format offers write ups from people involved in the project, pictures of scenes from the movie, several art cards with more shots from the movie, and a special to a tribute of the life of Patrick Swayze. His is a talent greatly missed and listening to this soundtrack brings back just how much he brought to table with both the music and dance aspect of this film. If you are a fan of the movie and the music, you must check out this collector’s edition.
