Skip-Dawg seems like an unaffected moniker for an east coast rapper with such an impressive list of credentials to his name. In addition to releasing a total of four studio albums, he is also an Ivy League university graduate at the tender age of 20 and an Olympic level athlete. What makes the rapper even more remarkable is that he has accomplished all these feats while suffering from a condition that caused his lungs to collapse on multiple occasions. We Will Rise heralds his first full length release after undergoing intense surgeries on both of his lungs in 2005.
We Will Rise is a portrait of overcoming obstacles, accomplishing the near impossible and loving life. “Skip To The Floor” starts off the album on a playful note with a guitar backed rhythm which is complemented by a catchy chorus and a light beat. The disc transfers to “Make A Miracle Happen,” arguably the most emotionally charged recap of the rappers struggle to get back to rhyming after his last medical intervention. Doused with guest Sassee’s urging stance of “make a miracle happen” and a piano driven background, Skip delivers a genuine and forceful dictation of his struggles and triumph. The album continues onto its rousing title track “We Will Rise” that expands its focus as a tribute to his former teammate and friend, Brendan Hansen who is a two-time Olympian and holder of the world record in the 100 Meter Breast Stroke and 4x100 Medley Relay.
The rapper switches onto lighter subject matter with “Never Knew” which talks about the perfect partner. Similarly, “All For You” is an upbeat ode to his favorite girl which is supported by a steady beat and genuine chorus discussing his dedication to the love of his life. “You and I” furthers the romantic fare with an effort to describe the steps the rapper will take to ensure a happy relationship.
The album continues onto “That High” which provides another personal recount of the rapper lying in his hospital bed, channeled by a somber piano driven beat and Skip’s lyrical lust for life. “Everybody Gather Round” has especially strong production values with a symphonious background that justifies the directness of the tracks lyrical content, which speaks about the rappers dedication to his craft.
Overall Skip-Dog has released a well produced album that has a strong message, which is rarely found in today’s rap albums; it speaks of perseverance and triumph like the honest content found in classic hip hop pieces such as Run DMC’s “It’s Tricky.” On We Will Rise, Skip-Dawg and Interscope Record’s Beatgodz have married touching and relevant lyrical content to typical hip hop flavors that serve as a fresh listen for rap fans everywhere.
