Pretenders
Pretenders

The Pretenders recorded output in the studio is not extensive considering their self titled debut was released in 1980. One thing they did do when they released an album was to make sure it counted. And did that ever apply on their debut, which is considered by many, including this fan, to be their very best.
Pretenders from track one to twelve is solid rock-pop with a snarling punk underbelly. Their songs have staying power and that is exactly why Audio Fidelity decided to give it their official stamp of approval by releasing it in their collectable 24kt Gold format.
I always loved this album and thought Chrissie Hynde was a unique vocalist and performer. She was sexy-tough and got her songs across with immense energy and a style you could not ignore. And the late James-Honeyman Scott’s guitar licks could make the paint peel off your walls. They had it all going for them on this release.
“Mystery Achievement” and “Brass In Pocket” were big hits and rightfully so, they had more hooks than a heavyweight prize fight. The tracks leaned more towards the pop side and their polar opposites were apparent on stomp on the floor in your face tracks like “Tattooed Love Boys” and the killer lead off rocker “Precious”.
Audio Fidelity does an excellent job bringing out the best in this release and it is a tribute to hard driving rock-pop music and the bottom line undying popularity of this album. With their process you never hear highs or lows just an even sharp reproduction that lends itself quite well to rock releases. These are limited edition releases so snag your copy before they disappear.
