February 2, 2010-New York, New York-The big band sound of RG Royal Orchestra will be celebrated around the world today as their new release Impact is released to give the jazz community a shot of adrenaline that it never expected.
The main vision of producer Recaredo Gutierrez, is to bring back good music and he said "In addition to Latin music, I love big bands," he says, "including that of Ray Conniff, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Damaso Perez Prado, and Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey. I believe in a pure sound with no electronics. My goal is to have a new orchestra play classic music for today's audience."
The 20-piece RG Royal Sound Orchestra is comprised of 13 horns and a seven-piece rhythm section that includes two guitarists and two percussionists. The orchestra performs three arrangements apiece from musical director Mike Lewis and Hilario Duran plus two from Tony Taño, Jorge Arronte and Raul "Lulo" Perez. Duran, Arronte and Perez split the piano duties throughout the album.
Standards like “Hotel Califorinia”, “My Way” and “Can’t Help Falling In Love” have never sounded so fresh and invigorated. People will not get what they expect when listening to Impact but the unexpected is the very factor that makes this music so exciting. It was the intention of the creators to bring a certain atmosphere and familiarity to these great songs but the goal here is to reinvent them with the RG Royal Sound Orchestra using the big band sound injected with a Latino influence. The outcome is pleasing and it will not only lend the earned respect to the tunes themselves but to the jazz genre and its broad scope and reach that is always available. The band took the music’s capabilities and adapted the innate versatility of the genus beautifully within each composition.

Guitarist Dean Shoultz Releases Debut CD All The Pretty Horses

New Orleans, LA -December 15, 2009-Louisiana native Dean Shoultz grew up in the heart of Cajun country. As a 12-year-old boy and his spanking new guitar from Sears, he could not resist the sounds that guitar legend Eddie Van Halen was producing. As time passed, Shoultz went through different band members as a leader then decided to take some guitar courses from Berklee College of Music. Ever the steadfast student, Shoultz would accelerate his playing to another level with each successive lesson and continued playing in bands that eventually led to the musical heights attained on his debut solo release All The Pretty Horses on indie labelPrime Time Music.
 
Shoultz released an album with his brother as part of the King Creole band titled Spiritual Democracy and it was not long after that he started thinking about doing his own album. Armed and ready with a battery of Melancon guitars and Mesa Boogie amps, Shoultz partnered with producer Pershing Wells. With Shoultz supplying all of the guitars, most of the bass and lead vocals on two songs, All the Pretty Horses was set to become a reality.
 
All The Pretty Horses kicks off with atmospheric sounds provided by an acoustic guitar then a piercing electric lead steps in to take you to musical nirvana,  a scenario that becomes commonplace on this album. Dean’s appreciation for the visionary Martin Luther King comes alive in the track “I Have A Dream” and FDR’s famous D-Day speech gets a spotlight in “War” which is one of Dean’s personal favorites.
 
Once rock enthusiasts give All The Pretty Horsesa spin, the name Dean Shoultz will become synonymous with the word guitar hero and soon you will start hearing his name when discussing current and upcoming indie artists.
 
Dean commented “The songs started off with hooks and rhythmic patterns that came to mind, and we just expounded on that. But it’s not mindless playing - it’s more melodic in nature.”
 
The guitar playing is beyond excellent on All The Pretty Horses and the technical proficiency that Dean displays on the recording is exemplary.  Dean will continue to record more in the future while supporting the recording through a series of live dates in that will take shape in early 2010.

Arthur Adams was born on Christmas, 1940 in Medon, Tennessee. He made his debut in church at the age of six and he has been performing and recording for decades. Eugene, Oregon-October 7, 2009–Halie Loren has made her mark in Indie music over the years with several highly acclaimed releases. Most recently the jazz singer and songwriter was awarded for her excellence in both vocals and recording at the Just Plain Folks Music Awards 2009.
 
Halie walked away with the coveted Best Vocal Jazz Album for the superb 2008 release, They Oughta Write a Song. A collection of standards, jazzified classics, and three of her own original co-writes, the album has garnered excellent critical reviews and continues to be played on stations around the globe.
 
Loren said, “I give much credit for the album's cohesive and solid sound to the amazing talents of the musicians who played on this album:  Matt Treder (Piano), who was my co-producer and also arranged much ofthe music, Mark Schneider (Bass), Brian West (Drums), and Tim McLaughlin (Trumpet).”
 
Just Plain Folks organization’s 50,000 membership is made up of an array of independent artists at every level of recognition, including Grammy, European Music and Academy Award winners. Loren began singing professionally at 15 and is earning a reputation as one of today’s top singers and songwriters in a variety of genres, all with a pop/jazz-leaning focus. It is this vast experience and knowledge that allows him to lead such an impressive group of musicians aptly named The Aggregation. All the compositions on Groove’s Mood were arranged by Allen that includes 10 tracks of contemporary jazz workouts and popular covers of Stevie Wonder tunes such as “You Are The Sunshine” and “My Cherie Amour”.
In addition to leading The Aggregation Eddie Allen also leads a quartet, a quintet, a Latin/Brazilian project and a large ensemble which brings together acoustic and electric/electronic instruments, a big band which not only plays his compositions and arrangements, but also the music of such jazz greats as Jimmy Heath, Bobby Watson, Muhal Richard Abrams and Rufus Reid. Allen also has published author and teacher listed on his impressive resume of accomplishments, his book An Introduction TO The Bb Concert Blues serves as an instructional method book. When his is not playing out live he conducts classes at Long Island University and Brooklyn College.

Game designer Tomonobu Itagaki (Ninja Gaiden, Dead or Alive) from Team Ninja recently stepped down from his position setting the stage for an original ninja action title to emerge without having to compete with a new Ninja Gaiden game. From Software attempts to position itself as the master ninja among all newcomers, however, the word “original” is not something you will find in a description of Ninja Blade.  

With a name as generic as “Ninja Blade,” a red flag is waved from the outset. The presentation is slick with a well rendered Tokyo skyline and impressive aerial acrobatics throughout the game. Aside from the obvious similarities to Ninja Gaiden in terms or aesthetics, Ninja Blade borrows heavily story-wise from games such as Resident Evil 5 and Parasite Eve with a mysterious viral outbreak that drastically alters its victim’s cellular structure. The most logical step is to contact ninjas to assist with the containment of the infected. The story traps Ninja Blade in between the realms of a serious sci-fi horror tone and an off-the-wall arcade action vibe. Depending on your personality, you will either question the use of ninjas in a modern biological threat or ignore the convoluted scenario altogether in order to jump back into the ninja craziness.

The sound design is surprisingly thoughtful. The music mixes action, horror and suspense while balancing old Japanese instrumentals with a futuristic metropolitan score. The only problem is that the sound effects are overpowering by default and usually end up covering over the stage music, but a simple tweak in the audio options can fix this issue quickly. Voice acting dialogue and delivery are stiff and unbelievable while doing little to engross the player with who these people are and why we should care.

Again, Ninja Blade borrows from other games in the game play department. Almost half the game is played utilizing God of War-like quick button events forcing players to replay segments over and over until the right buttons are pressed. Other than an overall ninja score hindrance, failing these events doesn’t really penalize the player which makes the events somewhat annoying to redo time and time again. On the positive side, these events will keep you focused on what is happening on screen while effectively breaking up the monotonous monster mashing. You are presented with three weapons: an average katana, a strong but slow great sword and fast yet weak dual blades. You can upgrade these weapons with blood crystals picked up after killing monsters not unlike the PS2 action adventure title Onimusha. Magic attacks or “ninjitsu” consist of gaming’s most recognized cliché of elemental based attacks. You can use wind, fire, lightning and etcetera, but most situations are easily handled with your regular attacks. Enemies are also familiar including mutants, giant bugs, worm serpents and bats.

Ninja Blade is not a terrible game. It simply settles for mediocrity like so many action games before it. The game takes elements from proven game franchises and homogenizes these traits into something forgettable. In theory, this game should be stellar but instead fails to stay with you long after you have left it.

New York, New York-May 19, 2009-Scotty Barnhart has released his first solo offering Say It Plain. After 17 years as a featured soloist with the Count Basie Orchestra it was time to make his own statement.
Say It Plain totally encapsulates his experience as an artist and the advent of a long overdue solo album has put Barnhart in an entirely different setting and one that he is leading.

Scotty wrote The World of Jazz Trumpet, which is the first work of its kind. The volume has an introduction by Clark Terry and the late great Freddie Hubbard. This was a significant achievement for the artist and the new solo release is yet another rung on the ladder to acclaim that reaches another level.

Barnhart’s Say It Plain stays on the straight but not so narrow path while following all the fundamentals of jazz such as 4/4 swing, the blues, ballads, and a touch of Latin rhythms, which keeps the listener enthralled and ready for all of the superb changes from track to track. 

Say It Plain is a prolific solo album that shows how much Scotty is respected by his peers such as luminaries Wynton and Ellis Marsalis, Clark Terry and Marcus Roberts, who all take part in the sessions.

The legendary Coltrane piece “Giant Steps” leads off the recording and it is significant in that the artist is taking a very big step in expanding his presence in the jazz community while reaching out to an already established audience and creating the opportunity to appeal to audiences of all ages on a worldwide platform now available to any reputable artist. The difficulty of such a selection goes without saying and the fact that right from the start Barnhart puts his heart on the line is a credit to his well honed chops and sterling reputation.

Memphis, Tennessee-May 18, 2009-The band Rock City has returned from the ashes like the proverbial Phoenix, taking their rightfully earned place as one of the innovators of Rock as we know it today.
Who Can Find The Dreamer? delivers the goods just as the previous self titled release in 2003. Without exception the newly transformed recording brings the focus of forceful Rock with great storylines to the forefront once again and it will most certainly delight longtime fans and win legions of new listeners.
Who Can Find The Dreamer? is the complete package offering aural pleasures combined with provoking eye candy on the CD insert. The colorful imagery is provided by Ann Harper and rendered by graphic designer Steve Cox. The promotional video for the spectacular artwork is available on You Tube.
Although the original recording dates back to 1984 the present version has a much richer, warmer, harder rocking sound due to the removal of the drum machine tracks and excessive synthesizer overdubs. The acoustic percussion fills out the sound beautifully thanks to Joshua Dougan (Jonah 33). Josh’s drum work fits the songs as if he had been present in the studio for the original recording. Select existing guitar parts were recorded again through boutique amplifiers to obtain better tone and several new guitar parts were added to the existing recording to not only embellish the overall sound but to present an entirely new recording that will find itself soon regarded as a classic by people that know great music when they hear it.
Original members Jeff Smith (guitars), Thomas Dean Eubanks (bass, vocals), and Terry Manning (keyboards) are very pleased with the final results of the remixing. Eubanks and Smith where on hand to make sure the recording got the loving care it needed in order to realize its full potential. The final results bring out spectacular soundscapes and a contemplative creative process that sounds as if it were  recorded for the modern day Rock enthusiast or in more general terms…the true music lover in us all.
Most of the tracks come in at 6 minutes plus to over 10 minutes. The reworked tracks found a new home in Memphis, Tennessee, at Ardent Recording Studio and Cognito Studio and will find their way into thousands of stereos and iPods soon.
Besides the prolific title track the album winds through a maze of feelings and kaleidoscopic wonderlands in “Time Passes”, “Seems So Long” and the eerie “Final Message”.

Now with several decades behind him playing with greats like David “Fathead” Newman, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis and many others, his many talents are completely engaged on the new release Blues Citizens.

Lance will be performing demonstrations regarding Guitarists and Technology. He will be using the Armas Mercury Custom Midi Guitar with Ghost Pickup by Graphtech, and the AXON AX100 with Brave Guitar Amps. The discussion will revolve around the many ways guitarists can be in the home studio, and record great tracks, as well as discussing bigger systems and studio playing and techniques. Lance will also dive even deeper and get into his own personal playing style while demonstrating some of his regimens while practicing and the overall guitar studies that keeps him sharp.
 
In Anaheim California January 2009 Lance performed at the NAMM music trade show with great success. While performing he received artist endorsements from Graptech – GHOST systems, Armas guitars, AXON, and became more involved with the Synthaxe. Eugene, Oregon-March 23, 2009-Halie Loren grew up on an island in Southeast Alaska and was outside of much what popular culture offered during her formative years. That did not stop the young music lover from soaking in all the vibes from legendary performers such as Etta James, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, and Patsy Cline. At age 13, she then plugged into the sounds of Sarah McLachlan, Jewel, The Cranberries, Annie Lennox and many others, which began her journey to finding her own personal musical identity.
 
Full Circle was Ms. Loren’s entrance into the world of Indie pop/jazz in 2006. After rave reviews for her singer/songwriter debut, she decided to go back to her jazz roots for her sophomore release after incorporating hundreds of jazz shows into her steady performing schedule and having garnered a growing fan base with frequent requests for a jazz album. For many years, Loren has covered a long list of classic songs from bygone eras along with her jazz originals mixed in for good measure during live performances, which seemed an appropriate combination for a first jazz recording as well. Enter They Oughta Write A Song… a strong comeback after a two year recording hiatus contemplating her next move that would push her even further into the music community with impact once again.
 
By all accounts thus far, They Oughta Write a Song… is getting quite a reception from listeners and press alike both in the US and internationally. With an astonishingly fluid jazz interpretation of rock classics like “A Whiter Shade of Pale”, Halie takes her song crafting wrapped in warm and emotional vocals to new levels. Equally effective are the long-standing hits “The Dock of the Bay” and “As Time Goes By” with jazz vibes that are all at once satisfying and a fitting tribute to the original versions. In addition, the title track is a solid original composition that leaves the listener in anticipation of Halie’s next suite of originals that will be due the next time she enters the studio.
 
The fine musicianship on They Oughta Write a Song… comes courtesy of Matt Treder (piano, keys), Mark Schneider (bass), Brian West (drums) and Tim McLaughlin (trumpet). Halie Loren finds her pocket with the outstanding backing provided by these seasoned musicians. A mutual respect comes through every song followed by an unrelenting give-and-take within each track that energizes the entire recording.

New York, New York-March 17, 2009-Bill Wimmer wanted to connect to longtime jazz associates and record an album. It all finally came together when he met with Dave Stryker (guitar), Victor Lewis (drums), Tony Guilzia (percussion), and Mark Luebbe (bass) to record a live set dubbed Project Omaha, set for release April 7, 2009 on his own Wimjazz imprint.
 
Tony Guilza was the catalyst of the record, according to Wimmer, and then everything fell into place when Tony came onboard to pursue the project. From a collective viewpoint all of the music presented on the CD is a labor of love and respect for timeless jazz classics. Tracks by Dexter Gordon (“Soy Califa”) and Rodgers and Hart (“She Was Too Good To Me”) fill out some the nine track jazz extravaganza. Bill Wimmer’s saxophone is the featured instrument however the stellar support provided by his friends never takes a backseat. In reference to the inclusion of Dave Stryker and Victor Lewis to the lineup Wimmer commented, “This group is not about mere star power to sell the record, it is about the connections that these two world class musicians have to Tony and the rest of the band.”
 
The emphasis on the recording is to showcase the band as an entity and focus in on the groove they create. While each individual puts some of their own spin to the tunes the outcome is undeniably a brilliant jazz recording captured live in Vail Colorado on May 13 & 14 2008 at Kelly Liken.
 
Although this is a jazz record, kissing cousin the blues makes an appearance as well on the standout shuffle “Cherry Red.” Jazz and blues are joined at the hip and this outstanding group of musicians made certain the audience got their fare share that evening.

Seattle, Washington-March 10, 2009-Jim Allchin left a prestigious career at Microsoft to pursue a life-long love of music. He traded in his co-President title for a guitar and went into the studio.  That’s novel by itself, but the stunner is that the CD he recorded, Enigma, is a captivating mixture of rock, pop, and blues, earning 4 ½ stars in early reviews. Enigma releases on March 17th.
Growing up poor in the Deep South, Allchin learned to play the guitar by listening to old blues players and more mainstream artists of the day like the Allman Brothers and Santana. Though he played 16 hours a day and was widely acclaimed as a guitarist, he soon learned that timing and luck mattered as much as talent. Although he continued to play, he went back to school, earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science, and had a long and successful software career. But, music kept calling.
From the first notes of the album opener, “Enigma Machine,” it’s clear that Allchin has his own style – he may have roots in the greats, but he is beholden to no one. Modern, spacious and driving, the song sets the tone for an album striking in its diversity. “I’m About To Fall” has a laconic blues groove that perfectly suits a tale of a man who can’t help but be pulled into a new love. “Rockin’ Chair” is a hard-jamming song that is an assertion of remembering sensual pleasures while getting older, while “She’s In Love With Me” provides an ethereally dance-y and new-age sounding plea for love and companionship. “I’m Your Man” is a pop highlight, complete with razor-sharp guitar licks, and soaring vocals to match. Enigma is sure to endear Allchin to media and listeners alike.
Musical greats including Buddy Guy and even Eric Clapton have heard Allchin’s music or played with him and given him encouragement. Throughout his life, Allchin has proved himself to be a remarkable man, unshakable in his devotion to what he loves. The talented Gospel group will be performing at the Methodist Church on March 22nd. The Blind Boys were honored at the 51st Grammy’s this year for a Lifetime Achievement Award.
 
The event is being produced by My Mother's Board and ALDO with support from local entertainment agent Missing Beat. My Mother's Board and ALDO are two local non-profit organizations that support the arts for the betterment of the community.
 
Formed some six and a half decades ago, The Blind Boys of Alabama are the Iron Men of the music industry. They predate Elvis, Little Richard, and Al Green, yet even in their 70s they are still at the top of the gospel charts and have won Grammy Awards for an impressive four years (2001-2004).
In recent years, The Blind Boys have proven themselves masters of bringing out the most spiritual aspects of mainstream music, while at the same time bringing the music of the church straight to the roadhouse. In the past five years, they've recorded moving renditions of songs by everyone from Tom Waits to Prince side by side with their traditional material, and appeared as guests on record and on stage with an equally diverse array of artists, from Peter Gabriel to Ben Harper. During this amazing run, the cover tunes and collaborations have been consistently tasty and organic, seasoned with a time-tested understanding of the sounds that move Man's soul.

New York, New York-March 2, 2009-Bassist Steve Haines directs the Miles Davis Program in Jazz Studies at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. With that responsibility comes many things including the future of young people dedicating their lives to music. Haines has been involved with some other activities as well besides his educational obligations at the University. The 2007 recording of his second release, Stickdaboom, is set to make its debut on March 10, 2009 on the Zoho Records imprint. The album was recorded at Clinton Studios, New York City, November 6 & 7, 2007 and engineered, mixed, then mastered by Rob "Wacko" Hunter and produced by Haines.
Stickdaboom features the only surviving member of the Miles Davis Quintet, drummer Jimmy Cobb. Haines and his impeccable double bass playing form a well matched rhythm section with the legendary Cobb, and arguably one of the best one-two punch jazz sections today still actively recording.
This past year, Haines he has either played or recorded with jazz luminaries such as Branford Marsalis, Wycliffe Gordon, Peter Erskine, Jimmy Cobb, Joe Chambers, and many others. His first album as a leader The Steve Haines Quintet: Beginner's Mind received international critical acclaim and was hailed by All About Jazz as "one of the best inside/outside records of the year.” He has recently returned to North Carolina from living in New York City to continue his teaching at the University.

The band takes the cue from groove masters such as Grant Green, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Melvin Sparks, and James Brown to create their own special blend of jazz and blues.
 
Iron City is Charlie Apicella (guitar), Beau Sasser (Hammond organ), and Alan Korzin (drums). They show avid listeners the way on Put The Flavor On It and those that enjoy instrumental jazz and blues receive a collection of tracks that range from straight ahead jazz to blues tinged numbers soaked with heavy Hammond organ notes.
While featuring five original instrumental cookers like “Chappy’s Groove” and “Delia Soul”, Iron City takes a well-known classic like Burt Bacharach’s “Walk on By” down their own musical path, creating an entirely different song with instrumental detours that cannot be found on any predetermined musical roadmap. With the spirit of jazz improvisation and the soul burning flame of the blues for inspiration, Iron City takes instrumental music to new heights.
Iron City is one of the elemental keepers of the flame in the legacy of the funky organ trios featuring the legendary Hammond. New York, New York-February 24, 2009-Jake Hertzog is a guitarist, composer, and bandleader that has just realized his potential with an all instrumental jazz fusion release titled Chromatosphere on That’s Out Records, which will be released April 7, 2009. This is Jake’s first full length solo recording and it promises to be well received by the media and smart jazz listeners everywhere.
Hertzog has been seen performing on nationally renowned programs and with top acts such as The Naked Brothers Band and has performed with them on national television shows such as Good Morning America and ABC's The View, Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards and NBC's TODAY show and CW11 Morning Show and Fox Morning Show.
The project Chromatosphere was recorded and produced by Grammy winner Joshua Paul Thompson and features some of the best musicians on the New York scene including Victor Jones, Harvie S and special guest Michael Wolff. Hertzog’s music was also featured on the Berklee student jazz record label, Jazz Revelation on their 2007 compilation The New Old School and their 2006 compilation, Ars Nova.
Although Jake played in rock bands early on he soon turned his interests to jazz. While still in high school he began studying with Chip McNeill and performed regularly with University of Illinois jazz ensembles to hone his chops. After graduating Hertzog began his studies at the world famous Berklee College of Music in Boston. As a 17 year old scholarship student, Jake started off his stay at the school with some of the most distinguished teachers on the globe including Mick Goodrick, Rick Peckham, Hal Crook, and Ritchie Hart. He also has worked closely with jazz heavyweights such as Joe Lovano, Terri Lyne Carrington, Dave Samuels, Greg Hopkins, and Phil Wilson.
